our adventure
Waar die Bo-Karoo hom disnis loop teen die duine duskant Niekerkshoop… lê die landerye en boorde van Lowerland, ‘n herlewingsboerdery op die Oranjerivier se walle.
Lowerland is a regenerative family farm between Prieska and Niekerkshoop in the vast Northern Cape province of South Africa. We love plants and animals, tasty food, healthy environments and operating outside the box. From broad strokes to tiny details, we are working to create a resilient farming system with plenty of opportunities for big ideas, complex ecosystems and capable people to emerge. We grow a variety of animals, annual and perennial crops with a focus on regenerative agriculture, holistic design and diversity throughout the system.

our vision and regenerative journey
Ons visie is om ‘n mandjie vol natuurlike, voedsame en heilsame produkte te produseer deur saam met die natuur te werk.
- Our product offering reflects the biodiversity and health we are building in our soils and our farm.
- We take our products straight to consumers, making organic food as accessible and affordable as possible.
- We farm sustainably and regeneratively, with a focus on perennial species.
- By creating a safe, prosperous and regenerative farm, we aim to serve this and future generations.
- We hope to inspire, teach and capacitate others to do the same, while contributing to a healthy food system.
- Our vision extends to skills development, equal opportunities and positive partnerships.
how we farm
Regenerative is a word that gets used loosely. Here is what it actually means on our ground:
- Crop rotations
- High-density holistic grazing with mixed herds
- Breeding programmes selecting for fertility, adaptability, disease resistance and resilience
- Closed-loop, integrated production systems
- Interplanting, green planting, no-till planting and relay cropping
- Cover crops and manure to build soil fertility and cut external inputs
- Minimal intervention, and zero reliance on synthetic fertiliser or chemical control
- Organic certification of crops, eggs and on-farm manufacturing

the people who farm it
Lowerland is not a brand with a farm attached. It is two people, their family and their team, on one piece of ground.

Bertie Coetzee
CO-FOUNDER — FARMING, LIVESTOCK & VINEYARDS
Sixth-generation farmer and former frontman of Zinkplaat, Bertie returned to Lowerland in 2013 to pioneer regenerative, organic mixed farming on the Orange River. Passionate about viticulture and cattle, he leads the farm’s transition to diverse, resilient systems—producing everything from stoneground organic flours and pastured meats to award-noted wines—while focusing on soil regeneration, closed-loop practices, and nutrient-dense food from soil to soul.

Alette De Beer
CO-FOUNDER – FINANCE, COMMERCE & PRODUCTION
Alette brings a deep love of gardening, cooking, and permaculture to Lowerland. Growing up on a smallholding and studying journalism, she met Bertie in Stellenbosch and helped shape the farm’s regenerative journey. Her vision of food as medicine and holistic systems complements Bertie’s, creating a thriving, diverse operation that nourishes people and the land.
Looks after: Finance, the online shop, and every order that leaves the farm. If you email orders@lowerland.co.za, Alette is who answers.
